"Kia ora my name is Vicki Rawiri and I am a Charge Nurse Manager in Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation at Middlemore Hospital, Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB). With no school qualifications and being a young mother I had no real aspirations to work or seek employment. I had 3 children and wanted to have a secure life for them so I went to work in a rest home. This is where my journey began. Having worked here 9 years I grew a thirst for nursing knowledge. I was inspired by my employer who gave me that nudge to step out of my comfort zone and go on to higher learning. It was a struggle at first having not been in academic education for some years but my determination and vision of what lay ahead for me kept me focussed on my goal. It took me 3.5 years to complete my Bachelor of Nursing at MIT but I made it. The proudest moment for me was knowing that my sons were proud of what I had achieved and that it instilled in them the same determination to do well at school and in their future careers.

I now work as a Charge Nurse Manager at CMDHB and I have loved every aspect of what I have learnt here. As a teaching hospital there are no boundaries to education and furthering your future in nursing. There is a unique culture about CMDHB which I believe is second to none compared to anywhere else in NZ. I love the diversity of our staff and patients and believe that our uniqueness makes CMDHB a great place to work, learn, and laugh together."
