Kids First Children's Hospital
Inpatients
Kidz First is a children's hospital purpose build for the delivery of family centred health care and serving the culturally diverse Counties Manukau community. The
66-bed hospital's design meets not only the medical care needs but also the developmental, emotional and social needs of children, young people and their families. Family facilities to support this philosophy include bedside accommodation for a family member, designated play and recreation rooms in each unit, a hospital school classroom, quiet rooms and family lounges.
The Kidz First team are dedicated to multi-disciplinary teamwork and committed to providing the best possible family/whaanau centred care. We lead the way in the areas of burns and plastics and will soon have a new purpose built New Born Special Care Unit.
The services offered at Kidz First Children's Hospital include:
- Medical care - a 36 bed acute paediatric medical service that practices family/whaanau centred care with a parent or caregiver encouraged to stay with their children.
- Surgical Care - a 30 bed acute and elective secondary and tertiary paediatric, orthopaedic, plastic surgical (including Specialist Paediatric Burns Unit) and ortorhinolaryngeal service that also practices family/whaanau centred care.
- Play and Recreation - provides play and recreation to promote optimum development of children and young people and their families/whaanau in a health care setting and minimise the psychological trauma of hospitalisation for paediatric patients.
- Child Protection services - provides education, consultation and support to CMDHB staff dealing with children for whom abuse or care and protection is an issue.
- Emergency Care - Adult Acute Care Medicine and Kidz First work in partnership to manage Kidz First Emergency Care with Kidz First providing 24 hour specialist paediatric medical and nursing cover at both junior and senior levels.
- Newborn Neonatal Unit
(NNU) - offers Levels l, ll and lll services for neonates.
