IV Cannulation & Phlebotomy Practical Training Workshops

This training is free for staff from affiliated PHO practices within CMDHB localities. Staff from outside the DHB localities will be charged a small fee.

These training workshops have been specifically designed to assist Registered Nurses working in Primary Health Care to develop competency underpinned by theoretical knowledge in the practical skills required to insert peripheral IV cannulae and/or take blood samples.

IV Cannulation

Participants booking into the IV cannulation workshops are required to have completed the on-line theoretical training. The on-line training link is as follows: http://www.cancernursing.org/ .

Workshops are 1 hour duration, with a maximum of 5 participants per workshop

Phlebotomy

Participants will receive basic theory followed by a practical training workshop (3 hour duration) with a maximum of 10 participants per workshop.

Practical training Workshops

Participants have the opportunity to undergo supervised instruction and practice on training arms and then gain competency under clinical supervision within their own workplace.

Competency  Assessment and Assessors

It is the facilities responsibility to determine who will assess staff and sign off that they are competent.

Assessors may be registered practitioners or medical staff who perform this skill on a regular enough basis to maintain their competency in the procedure. They must be aware of  local guidelines and procedures concerning peripheral cannulation practice.  It is preferred they have completed a recognised assessment training course.
