Surgical Services - General Surgery
 Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) provides a full range of general surgical services, with particular expertise in vascular surgery, gastrointestinal, endocrine, trauma, colorectal and breast surgery. There are also close links with the gynaecology and gastroenterology services as well as the other CMDHB surgical specialties.
Recently refurbished to provide the best facilities for patients and staff, the General Surgery Unit is made up of wards 20 and 21, and utilises beds in Ward 19 on the Middlemore campus. The service also provides elective surgery on the Manukau campus.
Staff thrive on a variety of elective and acute surgery, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care and staff satisfaction. Specialty services include Breast, Colorectal and Vascular surgery - each with a skilled nurse specialist to assist in the co-ordination of patient care and staff education.
There are currently 10 consultant surgeons, 12 registrars and 11 house surgeons across the three wards. The service is dedicated to teaching students and training doctors and has a Professor in General Surgery.
We foster a multidisciplinary team approach, which supports initiative and autonomy in nursing practice in conjunction with the nursing clinical career pathway guidelines. Strong leadership has created a friendly, enthusiastic, motivated and supportive environment. Staff are offered innovative and flexible rostering options.
New staff are supported by the unit's Clinical Nurse Educator and a successful preceptorship programme as well as the clinical guidance of the Clinical Nurse Specialist. We are also committed to providing creative and exciting professional educational opportunities, including a Post Graduate Specialty Programme and a nurse driven Inservice Education Programme.
