Counties Manukau District Health Board

Proposed Centre for Health Services Innovation

A new Centre for Health Services Innovation is planned for the Western Campus - across the railway line from Middlemore Hospital.

This joint venture involving Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB), Auckland University, Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) and Auckland University of Technology (AUT) will:

  • increase the supply of health workers
  • attract more local people into health training - creating a workforce that reflects the ethnicity of our community and
  • boost the district’s low levels of participation in tertiary education, reducing the reliance on health workers from other areas and overseas.

The Centre’s main aim will be to train nurses, doctors and other health workers, but it will also provide:

  • clinical skills training, learning and development for existing CMDHB staff
  • continuing education and leadership development
  • integrated academic, research and health management community.
  • up-skilling of existing health care workers (and others)
  • opportunities for career expansion and ‘apprenticeship models’
  • a supportive environment for cultural training.

This is a very positive step for Counties Manukau, and represents the next stage of development of our health services.

We have the unique opportunity to create an environment that will foster excellence in teaching and research and to mould our future workforce.

Did you know that …

Counties Manukau has NZ’s largest Maaori and Pacific populations and its second largest Asian population.

Current predictions show that in 15 years, our population will have increased by 170,000 people - around the same population as a city the size of Hamilton.

800-1000 new health professionals and care workers will need to be trained each year to meet future hospital and community care needs.
